does writing have the power to enact social change
I think writing has a lot of power on social change. Peoples thoughts can be put into writing an be expressed very strongly just as if they were talking to you in person. Sometimes it's easier to express your thoughts in writing then saying them aloud. So if you can have express your thoughts deeply in writing, there is a good chance you will get your point across. Like June Jordan's way to enact social change about the war in Iraq was to spread her thoughts about it to everyone who read her poem and get more supporters to help stop the war in Iraq from carrying on any farther.

Some nice ideas here Isaiah. Your thoughts are succinct and well phrased. I would encourage you in the future to engage as closely as possible with the words of the writers you've read in and out of class as you think and write in response to these prompts. What, specifically, about Jordan's poetry was powerful enough to inspire change? What might that change look like? How do a poet's words make a difference?
ReplyDeletethis was a good responce to the post, and I agree with what you're saying. Maybe you could give some specific examples of how it's easier to write your thoughts than to say them.
